News Release from Dupont Dow Elastomers

5/1/2000

Only buy genuine Viton®At ACHEMA 2000, DuPont Dow Elastomers advanced its "Genuine Viton® Programme", a licensee and labeling scheme that assures chemical processors and other users of the identity and consistency of parts made from Viton®, and demonstrated its brand leadership in fluoroelastomers (FKM) with a focus on new Viton® types tailored for specialized chemical, petrochemical and automotive industry sealing applications.

"Viton® has many look-alike imitators, seemingly identical until put to the test in tough chemical process and automotive fuel system sealing applications," says Patrick Lederer, European product and technical manager for Viton® at DuPont Dow. "Choosing an inferior seal can result in premature failure, and unexpected cost. So process engineers and systems designers need assurance that they are fitting exactly the seal material and brand they specified."

Behind the programme is a global network of licensees authorised to use the "Genuine Viton® label", Lederer explains. They comprise compounders, producers and distributors that apply the label to provide visible assurance of parts such as O-rings, oil and shaft seals, profiles, sheet goods, flat gaskets, caulk, and hose in which the only elastomer component is 100 percent Viton®. The family of fluoroelastomer products, which includes the broadest selection of FDA-compliant FKM types, offers continuous service in harsh chemical process media and temperatures from -40°C to 205°C.

The company featured Viton® Extreme ETP, described as a "unique and patented new family of peroxide cured fluoroelastomers that exhibit the most expanded fluids resistance of all Viton® types." Structured with a tetrapolymer of ethylene (ETP) new to hydrogen-containing fluoroelastomers, Viton® Extreme ETP offers outstanding resistance to bases, polar fluids, hydrocarbons, motor oils, hydraulic fluids and fuels, coupled with high and low temperature flexibility not obtainable with normal fluoroelastomers. Key applications include O-rings, gaskets, seals and custom moulded parts for the oil prospecting, refining, petrochemical and chemical industries.

DuPont Dow also introduced Viton® TBR and Viton® IBR to meet tough base resistance and product performance requirements in automotive engine and powertrain seals. "These new products are designed to withstand the latest developments in aggressive oils and lubricants, and operate at todays higher engine temperatures, longer service intervals and extended service life expectations," says Lederer. Viton® TBR is recommended for seals exposed to the very aggressive lubricants and greases used in wheel bearings, differentials, engine crankshafts, camshafts and valve stems, where total base resistance is required. Viton® IBR is designed for less aggressive sealing applications requiring better base resistance than standard fluoroelastomers.

DuPont Dow Elastomers, a global supplier of specialty elastomers with European headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, is a joint venture between the DuPont Company and The Dow Chemical Company, with more than US $1 billion in sales in 1998. Formed in 1996, the company marries more than 60 years of elastomer experience with new technology to bring innovative solutions to many industry sectors, including chemical processing, pharmaceuticals and automotive.

DuPont Dow is advancing its "Genuine Viton® Programme", a licensee and labeling scheme that assures chemical processors and other users of the identity and consistency of parts made from Viton®, "as the best defence against generic imports."
