Chemicals such as Viton and Kalrez With its line-up of Viton® fluoroelastomers (FKM) and Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) parts, DuPont Performance Elastomers (DPE) offered a sealing product for virtually every critical chemical process at Achema '06. The company showcased FDA repeat-use food contact compliant Viton® GF-600S and Viton® Extreme™ ETP-600S --- the latest specialty types of Viton® fluoroelastomers for critical pharmaceutical, food and beverage process sealing, and Viton® A-401C fluoroelastomers for best-in-class standard process sealing.

In FFKM, the ultimate level of elastomeric sealing, DPE presented Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6375 and Kalrez® Spectrum™ 7075 perfluoroelastomer parts for the most aggressive chemical process environments, and demonstrated that Kalrez® parts can be more affordable than many may think with industry data showing possible savings of up to 98 per cent in total system running costs compared with alternative sealing materials.

New types of Viton®

According to DPE, the new Viton® GF-600S and Viton® Extreme™ ETP-600S types provide superior steam resistance than silicone, better caustic cleaning fluid resistance versus EPDM and bisphenol-cured FKM, and low total organic carbon and metal extractables similar to PTFE. Both products are made with Advanced Polymer Architecture (APA), a proprietary development by the company that improves the processing performance of specialty fluoroelastomers. Viton® A-401C, described as a widely available industry standard in chemical process sealing, offers excellent resistance to compression set, and to aliphatic, aromatic hydrocarbons.

These recent developments are available through the company’s "Genuine Viton®" programme [of which Problem Solving Products, Inc. is a certified distributor] which provides assurance of sealing products that contain 100 percent virgin Viton® as the sole elastomeric component.

Kalrez® affordability

Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6375 enables users to standardize around one instead of two or three sealing compounds in inventory by providing outstanding performance in acids, bases, amines and steam up to 275°C service temperature. Kalrez® Spectrum™ 7075 provides extended seal life, sealing force retention and thermal resistance up to 327°C in the most aggressive chemical process environments.

DPE also demonstrated how chemical process engineers can save up to 98 per cent in total system running costs by switching to Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer parts. The data is based on calculations of initial seal purchase cost + costs of installation, monitoring, downtime and failure, over the lifetime of equipment in customer processes.
