Chemically Resistant Seals Rated to -42°C With DuPont™ Kalrez® Spectrum™ 0040 Parts

Talk to Problem Solving Products about purchasing Kalrez® Spectrum™ o-rings and seals.

News Release from DuPont (formerly named Dupont Performance Elastomers when this article was written)

8/24/2010

The latest innovation in DuPont™ Kalrez® Spectrum™ parts help meet the need for effective sealing performance at extremely low temperatures while maintaining the wide range of chemical resistance typical of Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer parts.

Kalrez® Spectrum™ 0040 perfluoroelastomer sealing parts are rated for service at temperatures down to -42°C, a major benefit in equipment used in high latitude, high altitude or other freezing cold environments. Typical applications include chemical and hydrocarbon processing equipment involving cold startups, hose couplings for chemical transport equipment and manhole seals for rail cars.

"The -42°C rating of Kalrez® Spectrum™ 0040 parts marks a major step forward," said Rene Garza, global marketing manager, energy and material handling – DuPont™ Kalrez® and Vespel®. "The -42°C rating also makes Kalrez® Spectrum™ 0040 an excellent choice over less chemically resistant elastomers, such as silicone or fluoroelastomers," according to Garza.

"This development confirms yet again DuPont leadership in perfluoroelastomer technology," Garza said. "The combination of our expertise and control of the entire development process from polymer to finished part pays big benefits for our customers."

DuPont establishes low-temperature seal ratings of various materials by mounting O-rings in a test fixture on the inside wall of a pressure-tight container. The container is then filled with nitrogen to reach an internal pressure of 0.4 MPa (60 psi). Temperature is then dropped in 0.5°C increments until leakage to the outside of the container is detected.
