Introducing Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6380 for extended seal life in hot, aggressive Amines, strong Acids and Oxidizing media

Talk to Problem Solving Products about purchasing Kalrez® o-rings and seals.

News Release from DuPont (formerly named Dupont Performance Elastomers when this article was written)

At the 24th International Pump Users Symposium, DuPont Performance Elastomers (DPE) will introduce Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6380, the latest addition to the Kalrez® Spectrum™ family of perfluoroelastomer parts, specifically developed to extend service lifetime in chemical and hydrocarbon processes involving hot, aggressive amines, strong acids and oxidizing media.

Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6380 perfluoroelastomer parts offer excellent overall chemical resistance and mechanical properties for static and dynamic sealing applications in harsh chemical plant processes at temperatures up to 225°C. In laboratory tests, Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6380 parts exhibited very low swell after 672 hours exposure to ethylene diamine, ethanolamine and ammonium hydroxide, compared with alternative perfluoroelastomer parts commonly specified for such environments.(Figure 1)

Figure 1

DuPont Performance Elastomers Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6380 demonstrated lowest volume swell in aggressive chemicals compared with alternative perfluoroelastomer parts commonly specified for such service. The amount of swell is indicative of how well an elastomer is able to retain its elastomeric properties over time.

"Before introducing Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6380, we subjected pilot seal samples to rigorous field testing in an aggressive primary amine process at 210°C, operated by a major chemical company located in the Texas Gulf Coast area. Several perfluoroelastomer parts from various manufacturers were used, but none offered service in this process environment beyond four months. By substituting Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6380, the company succeeded in tripling seal service life to one year. As a result of this field test and our own laboratory trials, we are confident in recommending the latest Kalrez® product for processes involving hot amines, strong acids and oxidizing media," said Tony Dorta, global marketing manager DuPont Performance Elastomers - Kalrez®, in the chemical processing industry.

Hot primary amines are extremely aggressive towards elastomers, causing performance to degrade prematurely. With Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6380, DPE has developed a product that outperforms existing elastomers in hot, aggressive primary amines, as well as oxidizing media.

Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6380, manufactured in an easily identifiable cream color, is the latest addition to the Kalrez® Spectrum™ family of perfluoroelastomer seals offering high performance in a broad range of chemical processing environments. Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer parts are available in standard AS568 and metric sizes. Custom o-ring sizes and shapes are available upon request. Using proprietary technology, DPE is involved in the manufacture of Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer parts from raw material procurement to shipment of finished products.
